7 Common Mistakes People Make With Antacids

A Pharmacist Explains What You Must Avoid for Safe Acidity Relief

Antacids like Gelusil, Digene, ENO, Gaviscon, Mucaine Gel are widely used for acidity and gas.

They work fast and are generally safe — but most people use them incorrectly, which can worsen acidity or even cause long-term problems.

As a pharmacist, here are the 7 most common antacid mistakes and how to avoid them.

⭐ 1. Using Antacids Daily Instead of Treating the Root Cause

Many people take antacids every day, sometimes multiple times a day.

This is wrong because antacids only provide temporary relief.

They do not treat:

Gastritis Acid reflux H. pylori Alcohol-induced stomach irritation

✔ Correct approach

Use antacids only for immediate relief

Use PPI / H2 blocker for long-term acidity.

⭐ 2. Taking ENO for Fast Relief Every Day

ENO works instantly, but:

It is sodium bicarbonate (very high sodium) Causes rebound acidity Can raise blood pressure Daily use irritates stomach lining

✔ Correct approach

Use ENO only occasionally.

For daily morning acidity → use Pantoprazole / Omeprazole.

⭐ 3. Taking Antacids Too Close to Other Medicines

Antacids block the absorption of many medicines:

Antibiotics (Azithromycin, Ciprofloxacin) Thyroid medicine Iron tablets Blood pressure pills

✔ Correct rule

Keep 2-hour gap between antacids and any other medicine.

⭐ 4. Taking Antacids Right After Meals

Most people take antacids immediately after eating.

But the best time is 1–2 hours after meals, when acidity usually spikes.

✔ Correct timing

Take antacids when symptoms start, not automatically after food.

⭐ 5. Using Antacids Instead of Sucralfate for Gastritis

In gastritis (inflamed stomach lining), antacids do very little.

The correct medicine for gastritis is:

✔ Sucralfate (empty stomach)

✔ PPI (Pantoprazole morning)

Antacids only mask symptoms, they do NOT heal the stomach lining.

⭐ 6. Overusing Antacid Gels for Alcohol-Related Acidity

After drinking alcohol, many people keep taking Digene or Mucaine.

This provides temporary relief, but:

Alcohol weakens stomach lining Antacids cannot fix this damage Repeated use may hide worsening gastritis

✔ Safer approach

Use PPI + Sucralfate

Reduce alcohol to allow healing.

⭐ 7. Assuming All Antacids Are the Same

There are 3 types of antacids:

✦ 1. Sodium-based (fastest relief)

→ ENO

Good for instant relief, not daily use.

✦ 2. Magnesium/Aluminium-based

→ Gelusil, Digene

Gentle and safe.

✦ 3. Alginate-based

→ Gaviscon

Best for acid reflux and regurgitation.

Each one works for different situations.

⭐ Bonus: When Antacids Are NOT Enough

If you have any of these, antacids will NOT solve your problem:

Morning acidity

Daily burning

Pain lasting more than 3–4 days

Pain on empty stomach

Alcohol + acidity combination

Reflux at night

Severe gastritis pain

These need PPI + Sucralfate, not just antacids.

🚨 Red Flags — Stop Antacids & See a Doctor If:

Black stools

Vomiting blood

Severe weight loss

Difficulty swallowing

Persistent vomiting

Pain > 10 days

Pain when drinking alcohol daily
